Think of your heart as a sponge, and every sin you commit falls as a drop of black ink into the heart. What does the heart do? It absorbs it. Trials and tribulations attack the heart until it is soaked. The only way to get the ink out is very painful: by crying until the tears wash your heart, and wringing it out. Over and over again. These cycles of crying and wringing cleanse the heart. It’s a painful process but it is also healing.
