One day a Bedouin came to Umar ibn Al Khattab (RA) and said:

“O good Umar, may you be rewarded with Paradise. Give me something to support my daughters and their mother. I adjure you by Allah to do it.”

He (RA) said, “If I do not do it, what then, O Bedouin?”

The Bedouin said, “By Allah, you will be questioned about it … and there will only be either Hell or Paradise.”

Umar (RA) wept at this until his beard became wet with tears, then he said, “Give him this shirt of mine because of that Day, not because of his words, for by Allah I do not own any other shirt.”

SubhanAllah! Umar (RA) had not wronged anyone; yet the mention of the Hereafter moved him to tears out of fear for his accountability to Allah for all of his responsibilities in this life!

He used to say, “Take stock of yourselves before you are brought to account (on the Day of Judgment); weigh yourselves before you are weighed, and prepare yourselves for the great judgment.”

Because of his great fear of Allah and his strictness in taking stock of himself, he would say, “If a lamb were to die on the banks of the Euphrates, I would fear that Allah might call me to account for it.”

Remembering the Hereafter, Umar ibn Al Khattab (RA) used to say:

“Remember the Fire (Hell) a great deal, for its heat is intense, its bottom is deep and the stay therein is long.”
