Al-Hassan Al-Basree (rahimahullah) was told that someone was backbiting against him so he bought him some apples and went to visit that person. 

Al-Hassan said to him, "You had gifted to me some of your good deeds (by backbiting) and I wanted to repay you for that and since I am unable to repay you in full, I thought to buy you a gift!"
